What is the Thyroid Gland?
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly shaped gland which is located in the front of the neck, below the Adam's apple wrapped around the trachea (windpipe). The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolism controlling heart, muscle, digestive function, brain development and bone maintenance. The thyroid gland produces Thyroxine (T4) which is a relatively inactive prohormone. The highly active hormone is Triiodothyronine (T3). Both Thyroxine & Triiodothyronine are known as the Thyroid hormones.
