 The salivary glands are very small organs that produce saliva. They are present around the inner linings of the mouth, lips, and cheeks.

The function of the salivary glands is to keep the mouth moist and help in digestion. It also helps protect the teeth from fast decay.

There could be various problems that the salivary glands can get. Here are the most common ones:

• 𝐓𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐬: Cancerous as well as noncancerous tumors may possibly develop in the salivary glands due to various causes.
• 𝐂𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐬: Cysts could be formed in the salivary gland and could cause wound, pain and infection. These could be filled with pus or other fluid.
• 𝐒𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬: Sialolithiasis is the condition which occurs when stones made of calcium form in the salivary glands blocking the flow of saliva.
• 𝐒𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬: Sialadenitis is an illness occurs when the stones that block the salivary glands cause infection.
• 𝐒𝐣𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦: Sjögren’s syndrome occurs when the white blood cells target healthy cells in the moisture-producing glands.
• 𝐒𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬: It is the enlargement of the salivary glands. These enlargements may or may not have any infection. It generally occurs in the parotid gland.
• 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Various viruses could affect the salivary glands. This could cause fever, chills and shivering. The most common include mumps and flu viruses.
